Manaus, Amazonas, is situated at the confluence of the Negro and Amazon rivers. The city was founded in 1669 as the Fort of São José do Rio Negro. It was elevated to a statute of town in 1832 with the name of “Manaus”, means “mother of the gods” in tribute to the indigenous nation of Manaós. Manaus was especially active during the rubber boom in the late 19th century. Afterwards it somehow lost the interest of the general public until the Zona Franca was created and tourism started to flourish. Today Manaus is a modern city with an important industry and virtual no access by road. Manaus therefore thanks it existence to the mighty Amazon River.
