What Is Carnival in Brazil? A week-long party characterizes Brazil’s Carnival, the Mardi Gras of the southern hemisphere. Celebrations and parades are held throughout the country, most notably in the city of Rio de Janeiro.
Carnival in Rio de Janeiro is spectacle of colors, music and dance. It’s a once in a lifetime experience and the biggest show on earth.
As throughout most of Brazil during the Carnival period, hotels in Rio de Janeiro apply a mandatory 3, 4 or 5 night carnival package. These package are expensive and although some prices seem (and are effectively) absurd, all hotels during this period tend to be sold out completely.
There is, though, a way around the expensive packages for Carnival: The Champions Parade. This parade held on Saturday after Mardi Gras (29th of February for 2020) is nothing more than the 5 winning schools from the Special groups and the winning school from the secondary groups parading one last time. Most hotels don’t apply any special rates for this period. Those who do, apply a mandatory 2 night package, but at rates far below the expensive main carnival packages.
