What Is Carnival in Brazil? A week-long party characterizes Brazil’s Carnival, the Mardi Gras of the southern hemisphere. Celebrations and parades are held throughout the country, most notably in the city of Rio de Janeiro.
Carnival in Rio de Janeiro is spectacle of colors, music and dance. It’s a once in a lifetime experience and the biggest show on earth.
As throughout most of Brazil during the Carnival period, hotels in Rio de Janeiro apply a mandatory 3, 4 or 5 night carnival package. These package are expensive and although some prices seem (and are effectively) absurd, all hotels during this period tend to be sold out completely.
There is, though, a way around the expensive packages for Carnival: The Champions Parade. This parade held on Saturday after Mardi Gras (29th of February for 2020) is nothing more than the 5 winning schools from the Special groups and the winning school from the secondary groups parading one last time. Most hotels don’t apply any special rates for this period. Those who do, apply a mandatory 2 night package, but at rates far below the expensive main carnival packages.

Rio de Janeiro – Highlights of Rio de Janeiro with lunch + Samba School Winners Parade
Breakfast and full day tour visiting the main sites of Rio de Janeiro with lunch in a barbecue restaurant. Pick-up at your hotel from where it should take no longer than 30 minutes to get to the train station of the Corcovado Mountain; Towering 700 meters above the city with the 30 meter statue of Christ the Redeemer on top, the Corcovado offers a 360 degree view of the ‘Cidade Maravilhosa’, that is simply breathtaking. Once our visit of the Corcovado is finished our bus will take us for a panoramic visit of Rio’s most exquisite beaches; Sao Conrado, Leblon, Ipanema, Copacabana. After lunch in a barbecue restaurant, a short drive to the Sugar loaf. Upon arrival we board the cable car up to the first level; we give you some time for pictures and proceed to the second cable car to ascend, the over 300 m high, Sugar Loaf Mountain. From its top, you can enjoy the wonderful panoramic view of Copacabana beach and downtown Rio de Janeiro. After returning to ground level, we continue our journey with a panoramic city tour of downtown Rio de Janeiro; this is where the city was officially founded in the middle of the 16th century, and is now mainly its financial district. The Avenida Rio Branco with its financial buildings offers a stark contrast with the historical buildings of Cinelandia, Praca XV and the multitude of colonial churches and buildings. We will also be driving by some of the most famous landmarks of Rio: Sambadrome, Maracanã Stadium, the Metropolitan Cathedral … to name just a few. Return to your hotel. At the end of the afternoon, pick up at your hotel or at a nearby hotel for your regular transfer to the sambodromo to watch the parades of the samba schools of the special group. Includes a ticket for Sector 3 of the grandstand. Return transfer included. Overnight.
